"Tell us how our end will be."

제자들이 예수께 여쭈되,

"우리의 종말은 어떻게 오는지요?"

"이제 곧 세상의 종말이 닥치니, 성적이니 졸업이니

하는 미래에 신경 쓰지 말고 당장 오늘 하루를 실컷

만끽하는 자세로 열심히 살아야 할 때입니다."

지난 주 개봉한 할리우드 블록버스터 재앙영화

"2012"를 보고 온 학생 한 분의 스피치 내용입니다.

칠 팔분에 걸친 사뭇 심각한 어조의 '세상 종말 임박하니

오늘 내일 먹고 노세' 스피치가 끝난 후 벌어진 자유토론
또한 사뭇 화끈하게 벌어집니다. 크리스천들이 주장하는
예수 재림론, 이슬람교도들이 믿는 마지막 심판론,
무신론자들의 자연진화론, 무관심론자들의 ‘글쎄’론에
이르기까지 제법 다양한 얘기들이 제각각 논점에 따라
높은 하늘 속 뭉게구름들처럼 뒤섞입니다.

토론이 거의 마무리 되고 다음 스피커가 연단에 오를

무렵, 늘 진지하고 말수 적은 남학생이 묻습니다.

"교수님은 종말론에 어떤 의견이신지요?"

(What's your opinion on the whole idea of eschatology?)

'에스카톨로지'는 희랍어로 '끝'을 뜻하는 'eschatos'

(에스카토스)에서 유래한 제법 고상한 영어단어입니다.

말세론 또는 종말론이란 말이죠.

이미 다음 학생이 자기 스피치 순서를 기다리는 중이라

길게 답할 시간이 없기에 그저 "무시무종(無始無終)"이라

간단히 답합니다. "No Beginning; thus, No Ending!"

그러자 뭔가 알 것도 같다는 미소를 짓는 그 학생의 표정이

왠지 무척 대견해 보입니다.

that you look for the end?

For where the beginning is, there will the end be.

Blessed is he who will take his place in the beginning;

예수 말씀하시길,

"너희는 태초를 알기나 하고 종말을 찾느냐?

태초가 있는 곳에 종말이 오겠기에 말이다.

태초에 머무는 자는 복되니라,

그는 종말을 알며 또한 죽음을 맛보지 않으리라."

'우리의 종말'을 묻는 제자들은 아직 시간이 환영임을

깨닫지 못한 경지에 머물고 있습니다. 과거심, 현재심,

그리고 미래심이 모두 지금 여기에서 한꺼번에 벌어지고

있음을 체감하지 못하는 제자들에게, 스승 예수는 진리를

둥글게 돌려 표현하고 계십니다.

지금 '끝'을 묻고 있는 그대들이 '시작'이 언제였음 정도는

알고 난 연후에 '끝'을 묻느냐고 되묻습니다. 'discover'는

이미 있는 걸 발견하는 겁니다. 커버에 가려 진작 못 보던 걸

'디스커버' 즉 커버를 벗겨내 날로 본다는 뜻이 바로

'discover'의 참 뜻입니다. 그러니, 내내 있어 온 그 '시작'을

어찌 보았기에 이제 새삼스럽게 '끝'을 따로 묻는단 말인고?

그렇게 수사의문문을 따끔하게 건넨 후, 예수께선 자상하게

시작과 끝의 미스터리를 크게 신비할 것도 없다는 투로

간결하게 정리하십니다. 시작이 끝이니라. 늘 시작에

머문 이는 따로 끝에 이르지 않느니라. 끝에 이르지 않으니

죽음이 따로 있을 수 없을 터. 고로, 태초에 머물러 시작과

끝을 따로 모르는 이는 복되니라. 그는 결코 죽지 않음이라.

18장에 나오는 내용입니다.]

이 말만 느낌으로 통할 수 있다면, 전생이니 종말이니

하는 말들은 곧 실종선고의 대상입니다. 시간이 휑하니

사라지고 난 후, 시작도 끝도 모두 공허함으로 회귀합니다.

살바도르 달리의 그림 "Persistence of Memory" (끈질긴

기억)을 한참 들여다 보노라면 '무시무종'의 메시지가

진하게 묻어납니다.

그 메시지는 지금도 고요히 외치고 있습니다.

for relief to the starving country of Bangladesh. T
he brainchild of Ravi Shankar and George Harrison,
when asked to help... some of the greatest legends in Rock showed up ...
and didn't take a penny.

This is the Indian Music portion of the show.
Ravi Shankar is possibly the greatest Sitar player ever. T
hs is pretty amazing if you are unfamiliar with Indian music or the Sitar.
