Nothing real can be threatened.
[실체는 위협받지 않는다.]

Nothing real can be threatened;
Nothing unreal exists.
실체는 그 어느 것도 위협받지 않는다;
실체 아닌 건 아무 것도 없다.

대체 무슨 소린가?하고 좀 의아해 집니다.
조금 까다로워 보이는 이중부정의 구문이 약간
고개를 갸우뚱하게 만듭니다. 바로 그게
핵심입니다. 알고 보면 간단한 말씀이기에 더욱
궁금한 긴박감을 가져 옵니다.

'nothing real' - 사실인 건 그 어느 것도
(...)하지 않는다. 실재[實在]인 건 결코
위협 받지 않는다. 엄연히 존재하는 '실체'는
어떤 경우에도 그 존재 자체가 위험에 놓이는
법이 없다.

허상은 늘 위협 받습니다. 나의 지위 명예 돈 권력
자존심... 돌아 갈 때 다 놓아 두고 가야 할 이 모든
허상들은 늘 위협 밥습니다. 원래 내 것이 아니기에
쥐고 있다는 그 미혹[謎惑]으로 더더욱 두려움에
떱니다. 귀중한 보물일수록 그만큼 현실의 보험료가
비쌉니다.

실상은 절대로 위협받지 않습니다. 나고 죽지 않는
실체. 더러워지거나 깨끗해짐도 없는 실체. 늘거나
줄지 않는 그 무한의 실체. 그 요지부동의 실체는
늘 당당합니다.

캄캄한 밤 칠흑같이 어두운 영혼의 밤에 본 그 뱀이
밝은 대낮의 새끼줄이었음을 아는 그 '실체'는
결코 두려움에 떨지 않습니다. 어젯밤 그렇게도
달게 마셨던 물이 오늘 아침에 보니 썩은 해골에
담긴 피고름 구정물이었음에 '실체'는 빙긋이
미소 지을 따름입니다.

하나님을 믿는 자는 천당에 가고 하느님을
따르지않는 자는 모조리 지옥에 떨어진다는 그런
협박[?]에 '실체'는 전혀 위협을 느끼지 못합니다.
그렇게 따져 판단하고 가르는 하나[느]님은 그저
허상임을 아는 까닭입니다. '실체'는 꿰뚫어 보고
있습니다. 하느[나]님의 참뜻이 싸구려 협박전술로
잘못 포장되어 있다는 사실을.

예수님의 본래 가르침을 알고 싶어하는 어린
영혼들이 교회에서 천당/지옥의 이분법적 위협에
놀라며 떨고 있습니다. "무슨 하나님이 저렇게
무서울까? 나같음 차라리 날 모르는 그런 사람들부터
먼저 천당에 보낼텐데..." "원수를 사랑하라 하시곤
어째 원수를 지옥으로 보내실까?" ...

핵심을 빗나가기에 괜한 공포감만 조성합니다.
하지만 '실체'는 결코 위협받지 않습니다. 성당에
안나오고 아직 하느님을 모르는 그 '비참한[?]'
영혼들이 그 누구보다도 먼저 구원받아야 한다는
걸 실체는 파악하고 있습니다.

법화경과 신약성경, 그리고 여러 문화의 폐부를
찌르는 우화에 고루 등장하는 '탕자의 비유' 이야기.
정말 통쾌한 인간 영혼의 승리가 아닐 수 없습니다.
'the parable of a prodigal son' 다 패~러블 업어
프라~디글 썬~, 이보다 더 아름다운 우화는 드물어
보입니다.

부유한 아버지의 두 아들. 방탕기가 있는 두째 아들은
일찌기 자기 상속분을 받아 내고 짧은 기간에 속전속결
패가망신하고 돌아 옵니다. 돌아온 탕자를 맞는 아버지,
제일 살찐 소를 잡고 보물과 비단옷으로 탕자를 환대하며
마치 금의환향하는 어사 모시듯 기쁨에 들떠 어쩔 줄
모릅니다. 이를 지켜보던 평생 성실했던 큰 아들이
어이없어하며 불평하자 어버지 가라사대: "나의 모든
게 바로 네 것이 아니더냐. 하지만 저 녀석은 잃었다
다시 찾은 자식이니 이 어찌 기쁘지 않을소냐."

인구에 회자되는 노래 'Amazing Grace'에도 그런
가사가 나옵니다. "... I once was lost but now am
found, Was blind, but now, I see..." 한 때 잃었던
나를 되찾았으며, 한 때 눈 멀었던 나, 이제 보네.
잃었다 다시 찾으니 이 어찌 기쁘지 않으리오.

잃었다 찾은 그 '실체'는 사실 늘 그 자리에 있어
왔습니다. 잃기 전에도 찾기 전에도 바로 있던 그
자리에 굳건하게 버티고 있었죠. 그런데 어느 순간
그게 보이지 않게 되더라 이겁니다. 그리고 한참
헤메다 다시 보니 바로 거기에 그게 있더라는
겁니다.

출가한 스님이 몇 수십 년 수행하며 관세음보살 기도를
치성하고 있었답니다. 마음 안팎으로 늘 관세음보살을
염불하며 친견을 고대하던 중, 길 위에서 만난 어느
도인으로부터 이런 말을 듣습니다. "그대가 그토록
만나보길 원하는 관세음보살 말일세, 이제 당장 집으로
돌아가 보게. 한쪽 버선만 신고 옷고름도 못맨 채 달려
나오는 그 분 - 그 분이 바로 그대가 늘 부르는
관세음보살이라네."

아니나 다를까. 그 옛날 출가했던 그 집으로 당장
달려가 보니 아뿔싸 이젠 많이 늙으신 어머니께서
한 쪽 버선 발로 옷고름을 만져가며 문 밖으로 내쳐
나오시는 게 아닌가. 물론 뻔한 결론입니다. 그
어머님의 실체가 바로 관세음보살의 현현[現顯]이더라는
얘깁니다.

실체는 위협받지 않습니다. 알기 때문입니다. 실체는
돌아온 탕자를 껴 안습니다. 실체는 사랑의 화신인
어머니의 가슴 안에 들어 있는 관세음보살의 실체와 바로
연결되어 있기 때문입니다. 실체는 늘 그대로 입니다.
위협할 것도 위협 당할 것도 없이 그저 그대로
여여[如如]할 뿐입니다. "가도 가도 그자리, 와도 와도
그자리"임을 아는 까닭입니다.

이제 이 말씀의 결론에 이릅니다. 실체가
위협받지 않음은 압니다. 그런데 두번 째 내용은
이 세상에 실체 아닌 건 아무것도 없다는 거룩한
선언입니다. Nothing unreal exists! 실체 아닌 것의
아무것도 아님이 존재할 뿐! 좀 우스꽝스러운
직역입니다. 다시말해, 실체 아닌 건 아무 것도 없다,
즉 삼라만상이 모두 골고루 다 실체일 뿐이라는
선언입니다.

이 실체가 다른 실체들께 하는 인도의 전통적
인삿말이 있습니다. Namaste! 나마스테! "내 안의
실체가 그대 안의 실체께 경배 드립니다"라는
뜻이랍니다. 그 위협받지 않는 금강석보다 더욱 단단한
그대의 실체께 제 안의 실체가 문안드립니다.

This is a course in miracles.
It is a required course.
Only the time you take is voluntary.
Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum.
It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time.
The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love,
for that is beyond what can be taught.
It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence,
which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear,
but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.

This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:

Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the peace of God.

Why a “Forgiveness Movement?”

After studying A Course In Miracles for 25 years,
I finally got the message.
How many different ways does its author, Jesus, need to say that
forgiveness is our only function in the world?
And why is it the key element in our remembering what is true?
Quite simply it is this:
The foundation of our belief,
the filter through which all our thinking flows,
is the conviction that there is something wrong with us?that we are
somehow guilty for something we cannot quite define.
The effect of this belief is to generally feel unworthy,
constantly strive to improve ourselves and
identify who we are with what we do.
This establishes an attitude of judgment of ourselves and others,
effectively separating us from them.
The peace and harmony, the joy and love of our God
created union with our brother is lost
in the turmoil and confusion that results.

Forgiveness releases the condemnation that guilt has imposed and
opens our mind to a way of thinking and seeing that is not dedicated to
finding fault. In the most direct way possible, it denies that the ego’s
unworthy perception is true and offers the peace of acceptance in its place.
Since it refuses to condemn,
our natural union with one another can be remembered.
Because of this,
forgiveness is the fundamentally most important thing for us to practice.

Forgiveness is what accomplishes the whole complex business
we call awakening. It is the practice of undoing our story that
there is something wrong with us. It does take a lot of learning to
understand why we think and behave the way we do,
but once we have understood this,
the way we actually change our beliefs is to make different choices and
feel the different emotional feed-back we get from them.
It is discovering and appreciating how good we feel when we respond to
a loving impulse rather than one motivated by fear and guilt.
That is the purpose of forgiveness;
responding to someone or to our world in a loving way with
an intention of joining with them.
Creating a new experience entirely the opposite of our “normal” need to
make someone wrong because we didn’t like ourselves very much.

Forgiveness is an attitude that dissolves all our thoughts of something
being wrong in the desire just to love.
It is the practice of making loving choices to find the freedom and happiness
they bring. We have spent lifetimes developing the habit of condemning what
is wrong?us?then making up stories that hide the truth about everyone.
Practicing forgiveness now takes back our judgment and
lets us experience what we had missed before.

What else could be more effective or helpful?
The simplicity of seeing this as the “fast track,”
to paraphrase what Jesus says, rolled around in my mind for several days.
I have understood the teaching of forgiveness for many years so I wondered
why I had not seen the power of it this clearly before. I asked.
Jesus said it wasn’t a matter of not previously understanding that
forgiveness was our function, but what I was feeling here was that we,
our consciousness, was now ready to accept that this was true.
We were ready now to begin to apply it on a broader scale and
allow it to take us Home.

A few days later,
I awoke with the image of a billboard in my mind.
It said simply, “The Forgiveness Network.”
With that image came a myriad of thoughts of what its form was to be:
a web site, what the “network” could do, what it could offer in the way of
giving and receiving support, sharing forgiveness experiences, and more.
I also saw an image of the earth turning gently in space, with pin-points of
light radiating outward to show the location of forgiveness “net-workers”
willing to witness to what was real in our world. The ideas will continue to
unfold as those who want to participate join in and add suggestions.
I suspect and hope this will always be true.

The movement of forgiveness has actually been underway since the moment
we seemed to “fall asleep” and forget what is true about ourselves.
God placed the Holy Spirit in our mind to show us the way to remember,
to “awaken” to that truth. The Forgiveness Movement and Network are a way
for us to consciously acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s purpose and to pursue
it together with conscious intention.

Everyone has an idea now of what forgiveness means to them.
The Holy Spirit will use them all to bring about His goal of revealing a
forgiven and a peaceful world. ACIM teaches what “real” forgiveness is,
and we will look in depth at what that means.
But when I think about forgiveness in its simplest form,
I am reminded of a line from my favorite Rumi poem:

“Out beyond ideas of right doing and wrong doing, there is a field.
I will meet you there.”
